Network Rail and AMCO East Midlands team awarded ICE Team Achievement Merit Award for Awsworth Road bridge replacement scheme at the ICE Dinner on Friday 9th June.

Working alongside Network Rail the AMCO team recently undertook the replacement of 116 year old Awsworth Road Bridge (TCC 27A).   The existing road over rail bridge required replacement with a 125 year futureproof design for the Ilkeston community.

In 2013 a routine inspection indicated sever corrosion to the north parapet steel girder, meaning the 25m long bridge was beyond economic repair.

Given just 29 hours to demolish and replace a bridge deck, collaborative team working between Network Rail and AMCO utilised careful planning, innovative methodology and an emphasis on safe working practices to achieve success and re-open the route to trains in 24hours.

Close collaboration also resulted in the innovative use of self-propelled modular transporters to not only remove the existing deck but also lift the new deck into place.  A time-lapse video of the scheme has proved extremely popular with over 70,000 hits on the web thus raising the profile of civil engineering profession.
