Reconstruction works on the historic four span Underbridge over the River Witham in Lincoln City Centre have now been fully completed.
Working on behalf of Network Rail, AMCO demolished the existing life expired spans and replaced them with eight new standard half decks sited on new pre cast concrete cill units. Lifting operations were completed using the mammoth 1200 tonne Gottwald crane with a 107m lattice jib (Link to timelapse of the scheme)
Works were carefully planned and sequenced to minimise disruption to the local community and meet the requirements of all stakeholders. The original structure was Grade 2 Listed requiring extensive liaison with English Heritage to develop a long term solution to protect the historic integrity of the bridge. The original 25m long box girders from the existing 175 tonne river span were removed and have now been restored and repositioned thus restoring the original façade to the new structure.
Network Rail’s Asset Engineer commented:
A very big thank you from me to all involved. The weak bridge has been replaced with new, whilst the historic Span too has been successfully retained, refurbished and reinstated.
The finished bridge looks fantastic - it just looks right
