Working for the Canal and Rivers Trust AMCO has completed the installation of a new winding mechanism at Bath Deep Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal
The lock, at almost 6 metres deep, is the second deepest lock in the country and, consequently, the gates and associated balance beams are extremely heavy and have been difficult for people to operate.
The new winding mechanism allows the gates to be opened mechanically with minimal effort and has, in the words of the local Lock Keeper Nigel Huggins, transformed the gates “from the hardest to operate on the Kennett & Avon Canal to the easiest”
The works have been delivered through AMCO’s long term MEICA Framework with the Canal and River Trust which commenced early in 2017. The framework encompasses the maintenance, renewal, upgrade, repair and emergency repairs of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, telemetry, instrumentation, control and automation systems for the Trust’s assets throughout England and Wales.
